Safe Oil Storage Solutions
Commercial oil tanks require secondary containment to minimize the risk of an oil spill. This added level of tank protection can be achieved with either an integrated containment wall, or a separate construction around the tank. Either use must be capable of holding 110% of the tank contents.
One method of securing tank contents is an aboveground horizontal shelter. For applications that require limited size or space, vertical double-wall tanks are the best method of storing petroleum, chemicals, and hazardous waste. Dike tanks have secondary containment tubs that typically have rain shields when installed outside and provide up to 150% spill containment. Single wall tanks can be installed with concrete secondary containment enclosures or can be installed around existing tanks to meet new safety requirements. Cylindrical fuel oil tanks are designed for outdoor use or in a crawl space, but can also be installed for indoor use. All enclosures and tanks are UL-142 labeled and meet the NFPA 30 code.

What Are Above Ground Storage Tanks
Aboveground storage tanks are large vessels and containers used for storing water, chemicals, crude oil, gases, gasoline and petroleum products in bulk quantities.
Theyre placed on surface of the earth on stable platforms giving them the name and are usually made of stainless steel, fiberglass or polyethylene.
Modern units have huge storing capacities and can hold up to 30,000,000 gallons of industrial petroleum products safely. They are also equipped with secondary containment vessel to prevent spilling and leakage of liquids.
Built to counter corrosion, these tanks also come armed with overfill prevention mechanism to prevent releases and can identify leaks.
Advanced storage aboveground tanks for industries are fabricated to prevent discharge of liquids with the following features:
Audible or visual high liquid level or surveillance station for constantly continuous monitoring of liquid flow in the vessels. Audible or code signals to communicate between container gauge and pumping station directly. Digital computers, telepulse, discrete vision gauges that offer fast response to regulate the level of liquid in the tanks. Pump cut-off devices that prevent spilling of liquid by 95%.
Lets take a look at the different types of industrial aboveground storage tanks:
Fixed-roof tanks: These are designed to have a cone or domed shaped roof permanently attached to its cylindrical shell. They are primarily used for storing water.

Understanding Diesel Fuel Storage Requirements
Liquid fuel storage requirements are based on fuel type, usage, and whether the fuel is combustible or flammable as assessed by the fuel flash point. This article presents information on applicable design standards for diesel storage tanks, including sizing and installation best practices. In addition, it explains how diesel fuel blending affects its classification and tank vent design.
Diesel-fueled generators are used for primary power at many electricity generating stations. Furthermore, emergency and standby diesel units are relied upon at many more sites, including coal and nuclear power plants, as well as industrial, commercial, medical, and educational facilities . This means that diesel fuel is stored almost everywhere power is generated.

While it may seem simple to fill a tank with diesel fuel, there are detailed storage requirements outlined in several codes and standards, including the National Fire Protection Associations NFPA 30 Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code and NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems. There are also a number of best practices for designing safe and reliable diesel fuel storage systems.
Tank Solutions Onground Storage Tanks Are Available In A Range Of Sizes And Configurations Whether Your Looking For A Long Term Storage Solution Or Just A Doublewall Self
Singlewall horizontal steel storage tanks are a cost effective option for locally manufactured tanks which comply with AS1692 Category 4 and can be contained in a simple concrete bund. There is a limitless number of tanks up to 150,000 litres capacity that can be placed side by side and manifolded, to minimise pipework.
Conversely, a self-bunded or doublewall tank will eliminate the need to process rain water that may accumulate in a normal facility. Doublewall Self-Bunded tanks can store up to 55,00 litres of gasoline or 110,000 litres of diesel. Remember, under Section 5.9 of AS1940 all openings to tank are above the maximum liquid capacity and therefore, precludes gravity feed or manifold balancing of stock levels.

What Are The Secondary Containment Requirements For Aboveground Storage Tanks
Secondary containment in aboveground tanks is an area that captures the contents of the largest tank in the containment area when an abrupt leakage occurs due to spilling of liquids stored inside.
Heres an outline of the secondary containment requirements for ASTs:
Construction material: Only impervious substances are used for constructing secondary containment area. These include compacted clay, concrete, geosynthetic clay liner, synthetic membrane, fiberglass, and fabricated steel.
Volume: Secondary containment areas in aboveground tanks should have a volume at least 110 percent of the size of the largest tank if exposed to precipitation. If the areas are not exposed to precipitation, the capacity should be at least 100 percent of the size of the largest tank.
Compatibility: The materials stored in the secondary containment areas should be compatible.

Are Above Ground Storage Tanks Regulated
Regardless of the substance stored inside, aboveground storage tanks are regulated by the 40 CFR 112 and thus carry the label bulk storage container rather the term aboveground storage tank.
Bulk storing vessels, as defined by 40 CFR 112, are any vessels used for storing huge quantities of oil prior to use, during use, and prior to further commercial distribution.
Diesel Fuel Storage And Supply
According to NFPA 30, storage requirements are based on whether the liquid fuel is combustible or flammable as assessed by the fuel flash point. The fuel flash point is the lowest temperature at which the fuel will ignite in the presence of an ignition source. NFPA 30 defines combustible liquids as having a flash point equal to or greater than 100F and flammable liquids as having a flash point less than 100F .
The flash point of conventional diesel fuel typically ranges between 126F and 204F . Therefore, diesel fuel is considered a combustible liquid. It is further classified as Class II if the flash point is less than 140F or Class III if flash point is greater than 140F, depending on the specific fuel.
However, it is important to note that when diesel fuel is blended with ethanol to reduce emissions, the blended diesel fuel has a low flash point of about 68F . The blended fuel is therefore considered a flammable liquid, requiring management of associated fire and explosion hazards. For simplicity, this article considers only conventional diesel fuel.
Additionally, NFPA 110 requires the actual size of the bulk tank to be at least 133% of the quantity established by the EPSS class . In addition, the bulk tank should have 5% spare volume above the maximum liquid level, if it is to comply with EN 12285the European standard.

What Is The Difference Between A Fireguard And Flameshield Tank
Fireguard tanks are insulated tanks that meet the UL 2080 Fire Resistant standard and the UL-2085 Protected standard for storing flammable and combustible liquids. Fireguard tanks minimize vapor generation during a pool fire by providing a greater insulation value. The insulating material is 75% lighter than concrete, reducing shipping, installation, and relocation costs. The name Flameshield came from the collaboration of the Steel Tank Institute and the Southwest Research Institute to obtain a definition for a fire resistant tank as required in NFPA 30A. Fireguard tanks are available in sizes from 250 to 20,000-gallon capacity. We offer this model in cylindrical, rectangular, and vertical construction.
Flameshield is a two-hour fire tested tank. It is not a fire resistant tank and does not meet the Underwriters Laboratories UL 2080 standard. Flameshield is still recognized by jurisdictions that adhere to earlier versions of the NFPA 30A Code. It is a popular option for tank owners because its less expensive than comparable Fireguard protected tanks.Flameshield® labeled tanks are manufactured with a tight-wrap double-wall design to strict Steel Tank Institute specifications and are subject to the STIs Quality Assurance program. Flameshield® tanks have secondary containment and interstitial monitoring capability and are available in 50 to 25,000-gallon capacities.

Security Threats From Vandals Or The Elements
Security threats are an ongoing concern for many locations. Protecting any fuel tank is going to be a big part of the work you do. In an above ground system, theres more to protect. You may need to spend a bit more on security systems to protect an above ground system something you should be doing already with a generator on-site. It is also an increased risk for accident vehicular collision.
Weather conditions can also impact above ground systems more often. This can mean more instances of repairs necessary. Tanks exposed to the weather are specifically likely to wear down sooner than those enclosed or underground. Underground tanks have a significantly higher level of protection because they are sheltered well. When factoring in weather, also consider piping. When piping is underground, freezing conditions may cause breakage and cracks. Above ground systems, on the other hand, can be better maintained in an enclosure that offers more temperature protection.

Aboveground Fuel Tank Electrical Requirements
There are certain electrical requirements that must followed for safety reasons while installing above ground fuel tanks at the construction site. They are as follows:
Aboveground fuel vessels must be deployed at a minimum distance of 25 feet from any building or electrical equipment.
Since theyll be storing gasoline and petroleum products that are explosive in nature, the containers must clearly exhibit class, group, and temperature range. The temperature should not exceed 40 degree Celsius.
For safety, its important to adhere to the guidelines laid by National Environment Policy Act .
Recommendations are given on wiring methods, wiring connections, capacitors, transformers, fuses, circuit breakers, flexible cords, conductor insulation, attachment plugs, ventilation piping, meters, relays, generators, resistors, and more.
NEPA has also made it compulsory to thread the electrical channels for safety reasons. They have specified that containers must be pulled tight by using a reliable conductor known as bonding jumper.
To conclude, aboveground storage industrial tanks are extremely beneficial and resourceful due to their highly advanced safety features, incredible performance, ease of use, and durability.
With technology becoming more advanced, new features are incorporated every day in manufacturing these vessels that make them more efficient and safer.
