Offload Your Biggest Apps

How to Free Up iCloud Storage (& Never Worry About It Again)

You don’t use every application stored on your iPhone. Many of them just sit there, like apps for your favorite airlines, third-party cameras and music production. And even if you use them only every once in a while, you probably don’t need consistent, daily access to most apps, which is why you should consider offloading apps in case you desperately need storage.

Say for example you want to download and install the latest iOS update. If it’s a major update, like iOS 16, you may need a little over 5GB to successfully install the software. If it’s a point update, like iOS 16.1, you’re looking at around 1GB. And if you don’t have enough storage space to update, you can quickly offload apps, which is a middle ground between keeping and deleting your apps.

Go to Settings> General> iPhone Storage and check which apps are taking up the most storage. Certain built-in apps like Photos and Messages cannot be offloaded, so be warned. If you find a sizable app you want to offload, tap on it and hit Offload App. Wait a little bit and the app should then be removed offline, while your documents and data will stay saved on your device.

You need to tap Offload App twice to “delete” the app.

Move Big Needed Files To Other Storage Solutions

When youre down to the essential files that you cant delete under any circumstances, you have a few more choices to free up iCloud storage.

  • Upgrade your iCloud storage to the next level. 50GB, for example, is only 99 cents a month. 200GB is only $2.99 a month. Apple is virtually giving it away.
  • Install other cloud storage apps on your phone. If you are reluctant to pay for extra storage, take advantage of the other cloud storage apps and their free plans. The main ones are and Dropbox, but Sync is also a good one for security-conscious folks. All three of these services have reasonable free plans.
  • Move your photos to Google Photos. If its photos that are taking up most of your iCloud space, consider moving them to .
  • Email the files to yourself to a specially set up Gmail address. If you dont want to use cloud storage, why not email the files to yourself and keep them in your Gmail email?
  • Move the files offline to a removable hard drive. Of course, you could simply just go old-school and invest in a removable hard drive or USB stick. Make sure to have more than one though, in case one breaks.

Prune Your Icloud Mail

If youre using Apples iCloud Mail, your email also counts toward your iCloud storage usage. Free up space by deleting emails, especially emails with large file attachments.

If you have Mail enabled in iCloud, then you can delete emails in the Mail app to free up iCloud storage space. Otherwise, you can visit the iCloud website, open the Mail app in the web browser, and delete emails within the web interface. However, when you delete emails, remember to empty the trash afterward to truly delete them and free up storage space.

Note that this only applies if youre using the Mail app and have it enabled for iCloud access. If you have another email account like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo, deleting emails wont free up space in your iCloud account, since email from other services arent stored in iCloud, but rather within that email service itself.

If none of the above are options youre willing to consider, then youll want to buy more iCloud storage. You can tap on Buy More Storage on the Storage screen. Apple currently offers four paid plans: An additional 50 GB for $0.99 per month, 200 GB for $2.99 per month, 1 TB for $9.99 per month, or 2TB for $19.99 per month. This is in addition to your 5 GB of free space, so the plans actually give you 55 GB, 205 GB, 1.05 TB, and 2.05 TB of storage space, respectively.

With iOS 15, Apple updated the ways you can transfer your stuff from one iPhone to another. And thats good news because the new iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, or 13 Pro Max has new cameras, faster performance, and longer battery life. But you still need to move all your messages, photos, videos and music from your old iPhone.

There are three ways to transfer things from your old iPhone to a new one. If you are running MacOS Catalina or newer version, you can connect your iPhone to your Mac with a charging cable and use Finder. This is fast, but you need a Mac and enough space for the backupfile.

You can also use Apples direct data migration tool that copies your old phone to your new one without using a computer or iCloud. The downside to this process is that you wont be able to use either phone until the transfer process is complete, which can take an hour or even hours to finish.

Then there is the use of iCloud to do the transfer. The advantage of this process is that you do not need to be tethered to a computer and you will have access to your old phone while the new one downloads your backup file. The downside is that you need enough storage in your iCloud account to accommodate the backup file. If youre on Apples free 5GB iCloud tier, thats probably not enough.
